Ola Boström, Technology Manager Komatsu Forest:

"Those who have chosen SCR have already done most of the work in preparation for Stage 4/Tier 4 Final."

For Komatsu Forest's Technology Manager Ola Boström, the past few years with the gradual tightening of emission legislation have entailed intensive development work with many considerations, discussions, and engine and emission technology tryouts. Today, we can conclude that Komatsu Forest is something of a trendsetter with its SCR technology, and not only within the forest machine industry.

"With existing technologies, there are two paths to choose between, CEGR and SCR. And today, all experts agree that SCR is the only technology that is actually capable of fulfilling the final emission requirements for 2014-2015. This is mostly due to NOx reduction, where SCR is undoubtedly the more effective solution. This has, for example, made most truck manufacturers change plans and switch to SCR," Ola explains.

"Development in recent years has made enormous progress, in terms of both effective combustion – which minimizes particulates and reduces fuel consumption – and NOx reduction. Today I'm very pleased with our choice. We've already done much of the work in preparation for the final step of the emission legislation as we have a complete and well-functioning concept that we can further develop."

Roland Nilsson, Forest machine contractor:

"We've reduced our fuel consumption by 2-3 liters an hour."

Roland Nilsson has worked in the forest for about 40 years. He currently runs Fågelstigens Skog AB and has three employees. In June 2011, he took delivery of his new Komatsu 931.1 harvester with its SCR-based E3-Power engine in Vännäs, Västerbotten, northern Sweden, where his operation is based. Roland's experience as regards fuel consumption is very favorable.

"We conducted a thorough review of the status reports after 800 hours, and the favorable outcome has been maintained since then. On average, we've reduced our fuel consumption by 2-3 liters an hour. And with continually increasing diesel prices, fuel costs are an increasingly important piece of the puzzle," says Roland.
